Enjoying raw food and raw "reads"

Well, this week has been "raw bliss" for me. I have truly enjoyed making all kinds of yummy raw meals, from shakes to smoothies, salads to pates, deserts and crackers, to just eating a piece of raw fruit, or chomping on a nice ripe veggie. It's been a terrific week for this! I have had full support from my family, friends and co-workers as it relates to my raw food needs, that it's made it all the more enjoyable!

I do plan to share quite a few recipes with you today, but before I get started I wanted to tell you a little bit about the book I'm reading, and the great things I'm learning from it. As you may recall I am currently reading Natalia Rose's book "Raw Food Life Force Energy".

So far, the objective of this book is to educate individuals on the purpose, importance, benefits, and dynamics of the Life Force Energy that is inside all of us, and how to make it thrive. A lot of the information I have read before, but obviously have overlooked, or have forgotten over the years. Now that I truly am living my commitment to a more raw food lifestyle, I seem to be more drawn and observant to all this wonderful information. I'm a better sponge now!

Anyway, Natalia writes about the importance of cleansing the digestive tract, as well as your entire body through various methods, such as detoxification, skin brushing, colonics, and of course proper diet (not a diet, as in a temporary thing - but a change in the way you think and eat your food, and what you eat). She writes about how eating food containing "Life Force Energy" not only helps to feed your own personal Life Force Energy, but it also helps to push out the buildup within you that drains your "Life Force Energy".

Natalia clearly states, "Life Force Energy is what does the work of healing and beautifying." Obviously, foods that are high in "Life Force Energy" would be "Raw" and organic fresh foods. She writes about the different levels of Life Force Energy that different food types fall under. Everything from fresh veggies and fruits, to nuts and seeds, and even fleshy foods such as meat and fish.

The principal that Natalia also refers to that I totally agree with is, that "...we attract the same energetic pattern as that which we vibrate." In other words, if we are energetic, healthy, clean inside and out, we are going to attract the same types of beings, making us more successful, happy, healthy people. However, if we are filled with low energy, and putrefied buildup, we will feel unhealthy, unhappy, complaining, and therefore attract those negative energies to us (without even meaning to). So it's really important to keep a lot of positive energy flowing at all times!

Natalia covers a great deal in her book about body cleansing. "The root of most illness is stagnation of the body's pathways and impaction of waste matter in its cells and tissues." I totally agree with that statement. It was because of this internal impaction of waste inside my digestive tract and in my cells that caused me to finally take control of my life and start working on changing my food habits. I still have a long way to go, but I can honestly tell you that I am 100 times healthier and happier than I was before August 2007. Turning to a raw food lifestyle has truly changed my life. Through this journey I have truly started seeing myself from the inside and out, and now I'm truly on the path of successful healthy healing!

I obviously have a lot more to read, but so far I am truly into this book. I really think that you should pick up a copy of this book for yourself and read it (if you haven't already). It's great!

Now on to the recipes I promised. I want you to know that many of the recipes I share with you, although somewhat original, for the most part they have all been inspired by other great raw foodies - probably like yourself, that share their recipes on all the marvelous raw food websites, like http://www.goneraw.com/, or on personal blogs. Thank you for sharing! Now for the food...

This smoothie was so nice and refreshing, and simple to make. I could have this again and again...

Peaches and cream banana smoothie:3 peaches, seeded and chopped 2 small bananas, peeled and chopped handful of fresh cherries, pitted 1 T raw honey 2 tsp. Psyllium Husk enough Almond Nut Mylk to cover ingredients in the blender 4-6 ice cubes blend well and serve. Makes 1-2 tall glasses, that’s satisfying and delicious.

I was craving a combination of spring rolls, and raw fish, so I decided to create my idea of a raw spicy fish roll or wrap (you decide). I have to tell you, this was a very big hit at work the other day. Only one lady objected to it, because of the seaweed. Everything was so impressed by the flavors. One lady ate four wraps - she thought it was so good! I find it refreshing to serve the wraps with avocado, and a handful of corn chips to scoop up the wrap stragglers.

Spicy Asian Fish Wraps:

1 med carrot, finely chopped1/3 cucumber, peeled and finely chopped½ red bell pepper, seeded, and finely-chopped big handful of parsley, finely chopped (you can use cilantro too, with a little lemon juice)corn from 1 raw corn cob1-2 handfuls of micro herbs with dandelion and arugula (or any other type of herb greens)handful of herb flax-chia crackers, finely crumbled (or any other type of seed grounded fine)equal parts of Nama Shoyu and Bragg’s Amino Acids (enough to marinade with)a splash or two of rice wine vinegar several drizzles of Avage nectar (or 1 or 2 packets of Stevia)dash or two of garlic powder, cayenne pepper, sea salt, shake or two of Dulse powder, and red pepper flakes1 cup of Wakame, and kelp flakes soaked well and drained4-6 leaves or more of romaine lettuce or iceberg lettuce (you can substitute with any other big green leaf) Mix carrots, cucumber, bell pepper, parsley, and corn together, add the Nama Shoyu, Bragg’s, rice wine vinegar, and agave, garlic powder, sea salt, Dulse powder, cayenne, and pepper flakes. Mix well. Add the soaked Wakame and kelp, as well as the crumbled flax-chia crackers. Mix well again. Add the micro herbs and toss lightly. Serve on lettuce leaves, rolled up tight like an “egg roll” or “spring roll”. Serve with Nama Shoyu, or chili sauce for a spicier flair. Makes about 4-6 rolls.

Now that the summer is upon us, I've been craving ice cream like crazy. So, I decided to make my favorite vanilla ice cream from a recipe that I got from Heidi and Justin Ohlander, and a chocolate ice cream made with bananas (recipe to follow). And of course, you always need a topping, so I made a delicious and easy raspberry sauce (see below).

Raw Chocolate Banana Ice Cream:

3 frozen peeled bananas
2 scoops (about 3-4 T) raw cacao powder
2 T Agave nectar
2 tsp. vanilla
3-4 drops chocolate flavored SweetLeaf liquid Stevia

Place in food processor and blend well. Freeze for 1-2 hours. Remix in food processor, place back into container and freeze.

Raspberry Sauce:

1 cup fresh raspberries
1/2 cup frozen raspberries
1/4 cup soaked dates
2 squirts of Agave nectar

Place in food processor and blend well. Store in a squeeze bottle container in the fridge. Drizzle sauce over ice cream, salad, or your favorite fruit. Great flavor!

If you've been reading my blogs lately, you know that I recently purchased a bunch of exotic fruits to try. One of them being the Star Fruit. Well, I searched for recipes using the Star fruit, and only found one on http://www.goneraw.com/. However, I thought it was a little plain, so I jazzed it up just a bit - and it came out super yummy! My son, and husband loved it too! Here's the recipe:

Shooting Star Smoothie:

1 Star Fruit (slice a piece or two to garnish with)
1 peeled and seeded pear
1 peeled and seeded apple
1 small ripe banana
3/4-1 cup almond nut mylk
4-6 purified ice cubes
a little water (if needed)

Place all ingredients (except garnish) in a blender. Puree on high. Mix well, and serve in your favorite glasses. Garnish with extra slices of Star fruit. Makes about 2-4 servings. This is a very refreshing and filling drink. Enjoy!

Oh another smoothie that I recently had was just a simple and refreshing shake-like concoction. I call it the Coconut-Goji Berry shake. Here's the recipe.

Coconut-Goji Berry Shake:

Meat and milk of 1 fresh young Thai Coconut
1 cup fresh strawberries
2 T Agave nectar
1/4 cup Goji berries
4-6 cubes of purified ice

Place all ingredients in the blender, and puree until well blended. Makes about 2-4 delicious and energizing shakes!

For my final recipe for this blog entry, I decided to share the absolutely fabulous mock crab pate recipe that I modified slightly from the original made by Alissa Cohen, that I found (once again) on http://www.goneraw.com/. It's really great! I shared some with the ladies at work, and they loved it. Even the one that didn't care for seaweed. Give it try!

Raw Mock Crab Pate:
(adopted from Alissa Cohen's recipe)

1 cup ground almonds
1 cup ground cashews
2 stalks celery
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1 cup chopped carrots
1 cup chopped parsley (fresh)
1 T dried dill
2 tsp Bragg's Amino Acids
1 tsp Kelp granules
1 tsp Dulse granules
1/4 cup fresh lemon
dash or two of Cayenne pepper
dash sea salt

Place ingredients in a food processor and mix very well (about 2-4 minutes). Serve as a raw pate, or make patties and dehydrate them to make yummy mock "crab" cakes. I prefer it as a flavorful raw pate, served on top of Romaine lettuce leaves, with a few drops of Chili sauce - Yummo! Oh, and it tastes great on flax-chia crackers too!

One last dish to talk about. Tonight for dinner I had the most amazing Strawberry Salad, with Mango Sauce. I found the recipe on http://www.goneraw.com/. Try it sometime. It's simple and very delicious!

Well that's it for me - for now. Hope you enjoyed this blog. Feel free to comment or drop me a line. Until next time, have a fabulous weekend!

Raw Tuesday

Well, I wrote sooner than expected, but I'm glad. I basically had a very nice day today, and I just wanted to share some of the things I had.

Every morning I have a small berry protein smoothie, and then usually another 24oz "raw body shake" which is similar to my "berry breakfast smoothie". But for lunch I kept it "green". I made a delicious salad, topped with fresh cut avocado slices, and Frederic Patrenaud’s Better than Ranch Dressing, that I made last night. The salad was made as follows:

Green Garden Salad:
Spinach
Arugula
Dandelion
Mixed Fresh Green Herbs and Flowers
Radicchio
Green leaf lettuce
Romaine lettuce
Portobello Mushroom chopped
½ peeled and sliced Cucumber
Corn from one Cob
Better than Ranch Dressing (or your favorite)
Avocado slices

(I made enough salad to eat over the next two days…)

I have to say, I ate way too many flax-chia crackers today – just like I thought I would. But that’s still better than cheating on Sun Chips, or some other S.A.D. chip. As you recall from yesterday's blog, I made another big batch, so it should last through the week (I hope)!

Since I had to go back to work today, I really didn’t get a chance to read any of my new books. Plus when I got home, I needed to workout – which I did.

For dinner I decided to have a fruity shake. I took an old favorite from Kristine’s Raw, the Cherry Vanilla Hemp Shake, and modified it to be what I call, the “Black Forest Banana Hemp Shake”. Let me tell you what, it was way yummy! Here’s my recipe:

Black Forest Banana Hemp Shake:
10oz. bag frozen cherries (or the equivalent in fresh, but pitted)
¼ cup hulled raw hemp seeds
1 small banana
1 T. raw Cacao powder
1 T. raw Carob powder
Enough almond nut mylk to cover the ingredients in the blender
Small handful of raw cacao nibs
About 4-6 purified ice-cubes
(You can add water if needed to thin the shake out – your choice)

(This made about 2 ½ tall servings…which my son and I finished off quickly!)

Well, that’s it for tonight. I want to go in the kitchen before it gets any later and make some raw ice cream. I plan to make vanilla, and some chocolate. Plus, I want to start reading my new raw books so I can tell you more about them.

Till next time!

Debbie :)

Smoothies, E-books and more…

This morning I started my day off with a super-charged breakfast smoothie, and some of the flax-chia sweet date cookies I made last night. I really don’t know what to call them, but they sure are good.

Anyway, the smoothie was awesome, so before I continue with this blog, here’s the recipe:

super-charge breakfast berry smoothie:

2 bananas
2 kiwis
1-2 cups blueberries
½-1 cup mixed berries
1-1/2 cups almond nut mylk
drizzle of agave nectar
water to cover, plus icecubes
1 scoop raw protein
2 scoops almonds
2 scoops uncooked oatmeal or oat groats
½ scoop lucuma
½ scoop maca
¼ scoop camu
2 handfuls goji berries

Puree in blender, and mix well. Serve. Makes about 2-3 tall glasses. Very yummy!

Today I spent a good part of it preparing quite a few things. I spent time cracking my coconuts, slicing my pineapples, making fresh salads for the next couple of days to take to work, and some more delicious flax-chia crackers, and the sweet ones too. I also made some more nut mylk, and a new salad dressing that I got from one of the e-books I purchased from Frederick Patrenaude, “Gourmet-Raw-Cuisine”. The dressing is called, Better than Ranch Dressing. I hope it is…Or should I say, I know it is? Lol

Speaking of e-books, I have purchased quite a few over the past several months. In fact, The base for the flax-chia crackers I got from Kristine Suzanne’s Easy Raw Entrees. The e-book includes a lot of easy and delicious raw ideas. One of my favorites is the Coconut Tortilla Wraps, and the Almond Butter and Sweet Berry Jam on Chocolate Bread Sandwich. Today, I also made some tasty hemp butter – another simple and great recipe from another e-book by Kristine Suzanne, called Ultimate Raw Vegan Hemp Recipes.

Some other e-books that I highly recommend are:

Angela Stoke’s A Juice Feaster's Handbook

…To name a few!

On another note, I went shopping again today, on a mission to find the green produce bags that keep your produce fresh for a long time. I ventured over to AJ’s Market – a very fancy upscale grocery store. Anyway, I found some great exotic fruit, that I’ve been trying to find, or that Whole Foods was currently out of. I found things like Star fruit, Passion fruit, Guavas, Tomarillos, baby Pineapples (very cute), Persimmons (some old time favorites), and some other tasty treats. I plan to talk more about them later when I figure out how I’m going to prepare them. Oh, and I purchased yet another raw un-cookbook. This time I bought “Living In The Raw Gourmet”, by Rose Lee Calabro. I have purchased books by her before.

Well, to end the evening I made a delicious fruit smoothie that I shared with my son. I feel like calling it the Berry Bush Tropicana smoothie. I only named it that because it’s full of berries (which grow on bushes), and tropical fruits. Whatever you choose to call it, it’s good! Here’s the recipe:

Berry Bush Tropicana Smoothie

2 bananas
handful blueberries
handful raspberries
handful blackberries
handful strawberries
1 mango
1 kiwi
handful pineapple
1-2 cups creamy almond nut mylk
fresh coconut water to cover the fruit
4-6 icecubes
drizzle of agave nectar

Mix and puree very well in a blender. Serve in tall glasses. Makes about 2 full servings.

Well, that’s it for tonight. Have a wonderful week!

Peace! J

Smoothies and more...

Yesterday I spent a couple of overs going over the benefits of raw living smoothies and juices with my Mother-in-law. My husband was concerned about her, and felt that I could help her out. So, we had her get her favorite raw fruit, and we brought over some of own stuff too. I then showed her quick and easy ways to make smoothies daily. We separated the fruit into several smoothie packets, so she could just take them out of the freezer, add water and blend...great idea!

Today we finally purchased a new "professional style" blender. We purchased a Cuisinart 7 cup blender, 500-watt fast, that also doubles as a food processor.

My new Cuisinart Blender/Food Processor

My old 30-year old Blender (Seriously)

It's great! I actually used it today to make a super-charged chocolate banana smoothie. My recipe goes as follows:

Super-charged Chocolate Banana Smoothie

2 bananas
2 scoops raw cacao powder
1 handful raw cacao nibs
1 scoop raw carob powder
1/2 scoop raw mesquite powder
1/2 scoop raw lucuma powder
1 handful raw oat groats or (organic uncooked oatmeal)
1 handful goji berries
1 to 1/2 cups raw almond mylk
drizzle or more of raw agave nectar
water to cover, and icecubes to chill

Blend well until smooth!

Very yummy and energizing!

I also purchased two new raw uncook books, and a smoothie book to add to my collection. The first was Dining in the Raw, written by Rita Romano; the second was Raw Food Life Force Energy, written by Natalie Rose (I can't wait to read this one. It's packed with all kinds of information and recipes). And lastly, the smoothie book is called Smoothies!, written by Stella Murphy. This books is quite the beauty with all it's color and great pictures! I got a second copy for my Mother-in-law to give to her on her birthday next weekend.

So now that I have my blender, and I got some more books, and I copied some more great recipes from www.goneraw.com, I have been inspired again to start doing some major raw uncooking. I went to Whole Foods today and bought lots of delicious veggies and fruits. But before I start making stuff, I had to get my "snack foods" out of the way. You see, I've been cheating an awful lot with Sun Chips. No, these are not raw chips, these are processed chips called Sun Chips. And they are damned good! But, they are not raw, and they are my weakness these days. So, I dehydrated a big batch of raw spicey corn chips, and some really delicious flax-chia crackers with all kinds of great spices, to curb my salty taste buds! I'm currently dehydrating some flax-chia, almond date cracker/cookies. I think they will be pretty good too. I didn't want to waste any food, so I threw this together with the almond pulp from my raw almond mylk I made. I'll definately let you know how they come out.

Oh, I almost forgot to share with you the delicious fruit parfait I made with orange juice, and coconut cream. I got the coconut cream recipe from another new raw book I purchased about 2 weeks ago, called Everyday Raw with Matthew Kenney, written by Matthew Kenney of course. It's a great book, with great recipes and beautiful pictures!

Well, that's it for now. I just wanted to give some kind of update, since I have been taking long breaks in between blogs. Maybe sometime soon I'll get back into blogging regularly. Until then, I hope you enjoy the few I do post.

Have a fantastic Memorial Weekend!

Keep it raw! Peace! :)

New SweetLeaf Sweetener

I know it's been quite sometime since I've blogged, and I'm sorry. However, I have been involved in quite a lot of things lately, both personal and in my job, that I just haven't had the extra time to properly blog. I do want to take a moment though and tell everyone about the new and improved SweetLeaf Sweetener.

Wisdom Natural Brands of Gilbert, AZ, recently introduced their new and improved SweetLeaf Sweetener - which is the first Stevia Sweetener with GRAS Status (GRAS is an FDA designation of food safety). SweetLeaf Brands have the only Stevia product with all natural soluble fiber. SweetLeaf is zero calorie, zero carb, zero glycemic index, and safe for diabetics and PKU sufferers. And now that it has GRAS we will be able to find it (or ask for it) both in Mass and Natural grocery stores - which makes it much more convenient. I had to share this information, because I know a lot of people like Stevia, but are wary of brands.

Although this is not considered "Raw", it definitely should be included in the pantry along with Agave Nectar and Organic Grade B Maple Syrup. SweetLeaf is completely natural from plant, to harvest, and to its process which is done with only purified water. This is a new process that is completely free of any chemicals, solvents, alcohol or enzymes. That to me is pretty pure! I know some individuals prefer to grow their own, and that’s fine. SweetLeaf’s taste is definitely better than any Stevia I have ever tried.

Wisdom is starting out with 50-count and 100-count boxes, and will eventually convert all the Stevia products. If you want more information about SweetLeaf Sweetener, or the manufacturer, please visit www.sweetleaf.com. The new website should be up and running with all the great info within the next couple of days so look for it. I'm all for the use of Stevia, as long as it's SweetLeaf. It makes a difference!

So check it out! I'll be back soon with more blogs, recipes, and just stuff!

Peace! :)
